Barrier protection cream for outdoor nerds

Even by this weather I use the bike for my daily commute and although I pack and wrap myself tightly in shawls and scarfs, my face needs something substantial against the bitter wind.

This is a more complex formulation than I usually share but it was originally made for myself. The outcome was so amazing that I couldn't resist share it with you.

Don't be intimidated by the long list of ingredients and number of phases. We had to do this to add each ingredient at the required temperature range for best efficacy and stability.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that when working with the GSC, you need to buffer the formulation. The rest is quite straightforward

Procedure:

1- Heat phase A and B separately at 85-88 C. This high temperature is because of the G2B. If you don't use it you can stay between 80-85 C

2- Blend both phases separately then stop heating and homogenize the oil phase in the water phase

3- Disperse the gum in the still hot emulsion

4- Start cooling down while stirring

5- At a temperature between 45-55 add the ceramide and continue stirring

6- At a temperature <40 C add phase E and F. The preservative we are using works independent of the pH. If you are using other preservatives you need to measure and adjust the pH before adding the preservative

7- When the emulsion is at RT prepare a 10% dilution and measure the pH. In our case it was 6,3.

8- Add lactic acid to reduce the pH between 4,8-5,5. Since this formulation is buffered you may need more acid than usual. Add the acid gradually and little by little and measure the pH in between

9- Take your stability and micro kit samples and fill the rest in a suitable jar
