Essential oils and the impact on the viscosity of cleansing products

In May this year we published an article about the impact of some essential oils on the viscosity of cleansing products.

In that article we mentioned a few essential oils that when you add them to a cleansing formulation cause a significant reduction in viscosity and as a consequence, a phase separation.

You have perhaps experienced similar situations when you have created a beautiful shampoo or shower gel and at the end as soon as you added the essential oil the formulation fell apart in front of your eyes.

You hardly observe this phenomenon with fragrance oils. They contain special additives that avoid this effect. Most of them have an impact on the viscosity and either slightly decrease or increase the viscosity of the formulation but very seldom they may contribute to the destabilization of a formulation.

Now we know the problem, what about the cure?
